Dear Minister Falcon and Premier Campbell:

I’m concerned about the state of seniors’ care in British Columbia.

Long-term care operators say they are reducing staff and services to unacceptable levels because of government underfunding. Doctors say that B.C. has fallen behind all other provinces in providing long-term care beds.

And the Auditor General says your government is not adequately planning for future needs in the area of seniors’ care.

I urge you to act now to fix seniors’ care by:

•	providing much-needed long-term care beds – start by keeping your 2001 election promise to build 5,000 new long-term care beds in the not-for-profit sector;

•	increasing home support hours to help seniors live independently and safely in their homes;

•	increasing staff in long-term care and setting a legal and enforceable minimum level of direct nursing care hours for residents; and

•	putting seniors before profit. I don’t want public and not-for-profit care homes closed to make way for private, for-profit operators.

British Columbia can do a better job providing quality, accessible care for our seniors. Please take action now.
